Priests Chapel at St.Peter's Seminary
Religious. 2023
Built-Up Area: 520sqft., Carpet Area: 425sqft.
Bengaluru, India.
Status: Completed
The space is a private chapel for the priests and brothers studying Theology at the century-old, stone building of the St.Peters Seminary, Bangalore.Â
The existing chapel is flanked on either side by wide corridors. As we are not allowed to make any structural or facade changes to the heritage building, we decided to utilize the same structural features to guide our proposal. The wall thickness of the stone masonry construction is utilized to create the bible stand and tabernacle in front of the existing window and door openings on the Northeast wall, thereby also not altering the building facade from the corridor side.
The deep protruding central beam and corner columns are used to create panels to highlight the space. The ceiling cove light is intended to stay on even when the space is not in use, creating an ethereal quality to the chapel and directing all eyes to the ambiently lit alter.
